Just a few kilometres from the mighty Burdekin Falls Dam in North Queensland, I pulled off the road to investigate a small watering hole surrounded by gaunt, languid, hungry cattle. Their hides hung from their bones like wet cloth. They curiously came up to me as I photographed them, hoping I suppose, that I had a few bales of feed with me. Unfortunately, not.

From there I followed a dusty track further away from the main road, looking for painting inspiration. The cattle were safe in my camera, but what I wanted was some inspiring landscape. I came upon the site of this painting on Old Glenroy Station, looking east from the Burdekin River towards the Leichardt Ranges.
